Lush wet SPRING in Como

and the sound of an Italian rainstorm
i wake up early
to have you all to myself
dripping spring deluge
hai mio cuore
non dirlo agli altri
lago di como

Sharing a little springtime Italian rain with you while I test tomorrow’s Weeknight Pasta recipe! Wish you were here.

2022 was tragic in terms of precipitation, leaving dry, burnt patches of brown cigarette burns on the normal thick green of the mountains around the lake. 2023 wasn’t much better. Hoping this finally normal wet spring heals the scarred post-drought forest.

This is the first time I’ve ever tried to write a poem in Italian and I can tell you that the haiku is a challenge in the Italian language. A haiku has a 5+7+5 syllable format. While English has bucketloads of short, descriptive words with 1-2 syllables (e.g. go, stop, eat, pray, love), Italian thrives on rolling mouthfuls of 4-5 syllables. A few examples pulled from my morning:

Italiano = English (# syllables)

  • nu-bi-fra-gio (4) = down-pour (2)

  • rov-i-scia-re (4) = spill (1)

  • nu-vo-lo-so (4) = cloud-y (2)

  • fra-di-cia (3) = soaked (1)

  • moz-za-fi-a-to (5) = breath-tak-ing (3)

Have you ever tried to write a poem in a foreign language? If not, try one today and let me know how it goes!

Italiano = inglese (# sillabe)

  • nu-bi-fra-gio (4) = down-pour (2)

  • rov-i-scia-re (4) = spill (1)

  • nu-vo-lo-so (4) = cloud-y (2)

  • fra-di-cia (3) = soaked (1)

  • moz-za-fi-a-to (5) = breath-tak-ing (3)

Hai mai provato scrivere una poesia in una lingua straniera? Raccontami! Se no, prova oggi e raccontami un’ po’.
