Summer Italian Market in July + Podcast
My first podcast interview about immigrating from Manhattan to a village of 1000 people in Italy
Ciao friends!
How is your July kicking off? Holy cannoli, I loved every minute of this conversation with the warm and funny Ray and Vanessa of Vite Narranti (Narrating Lives). We chatted Italian food culture, like and dislikes, life experiences, changes, and surprises in my journey from an American city girl to life at the edge of a small rural village in Italy and what happened after…
I’ll share with you a few photos of my early years in Italia that feel like they were last year but were very much not!
Even if you don’t speak Italian, take a listen and laugh with me at my intense American accent when I speak Italiano. Or if you’re learning Italiano, it’s great practice. Se parli Italiano, preparati per lo spettacolo comico, ho fatto un sacco degli errori!
PS You might notice, they call me ‘Lynn’ while we’re podcasting; Lolly is my nickname.
Summer in Como
Back to the present! We’re having a temperamental summer in Como, vacillating between spectacularly clear blue sky days and roiling grey cloud evenings. Here’s a taste:
Summer Haul at Como Market
As happy as I was to be back home this week, I was happier than a mouse at a cheese festival to be back at the Como market this Saturday! The July market scene was abundant with colors, flavors, aromas, and cooking inspiration.
I made you a little video to show the Como market in action and my market treasures.
Seasonal summer recipes for you to try!
Here are some summery recipes from both my archives and mouth-watering posts of other Substackers to take advantage of this bountiful season:
30-min summer pesto from my Weeknight Pasta from Italy!
30-min caramellized zucchini and onion fusilli from my Weeknight Pasta from Italy!
Stuffed zucchini and peppers by Giulia Scarpaleggia, Letters from Tuscany
Summer salads by Judy Witts Francini, Simply Divina - my tiny Tuscan kitchen
Crostata di Fichi e Noci (Fig and Walnut Tart) by Domenica Marchetti, Buona Domenica
ATTENZIONE! ❤️
I have a little announcement to make. You just might have noticed that I didn’t send a 30-minute seasonal weeknight pasta recipe from Italy this week.
Going forward, I’ve decided to send recipes every other Sunday, instead of every Sunday, in order to create higher quality foodletters for you! It’s a quality over quantity decision. I’m a little mad about it but it’s better for everyone.
SUMMER POLL
Meanwhile, I’m already up to my ears testing next Sunday’s recipe and I happily have garlic breath from my taste tests. Do you like garlic? Neither my son nor my boyfriend likes garlic which is a cruel fate for a garlic-lover like me. This week, they were both away, so I declared it to be a Garlic Festival in my house and ate it for nearly every meal except breakfast pancakes. The center photo in the market photo gallery above gives a hint on the other ingredients!
Buon appetito!
x Lolly
